Honoring Robert “Uncle Bob” Grant

October 14, 1946 - May 19, 2024

Obituary

Robert Bernard Grant was born on October 14, 1946, in Jacksonville, NC. He passed away May 19, 2024, in San Pedro, CA after succumbing to his fight with cancer. He is survived by his wife Katherine, his sons Jason and Dax, his brothers Bill and Daryl, his sister Gail, and his grandchildren Madison, Lelani, Kelani, Bailey, and Toussaint.

Bob was raised by his grandparents and grew up in Jacksonville, NC. He graduated from Georgetown High School in 1964. After following the direction of his coach and mentor, Gideon T. Johnson, he enrolled at Wake Forest University in the fall of 1964.

As a 6’2”, 225 lb Linebacker, Bob was a highly recruited standout defensive player from Jacksonville and was one of the first three Black players to join the Demon Deacons football program which made Wake Forest University the first major Division I institution in the South to welcome Black student-athletes.  He went on to become a three-time letterman and all-ACC defensive lineman in 1966. Bob excelled both on and off the field and graduated with a degree in Speech. He was also a black belt in karate, which meant no one wanted to challenge him physically on or off the field.  Bob was eventually inducted into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.

Bob’s play on the field caught the eye of professional scouts, and the Baltimore Colts selected him in the second round of the 1968 NFL draft. He played at the linebacker position from 1968-1971 with the Baltimore Colts and the Washington Redskins. Bob helped the Baltimore Colts reach Super Bowl III during his rookie season. After falling to Joe Namath and the New York Jets in 1969, Grant and the Colts would be back two years later. This time, Grant and the Colts hoisted the newly renamed trophy, the Vince Lombardi Trophy, in Super Bowl V earning him a Super Bowl Championship ring in 1971.

Upon his retirement from the NFL, Bob owned his own security company in the Los Angeles area and was the president of an investment company that specialized in real estate.

Bob was also a proud supporter and mentor for the Goals for Life Foundation, a nonprofit organization that sends former athletes into schools to work with administrators, teachers, and at-risk students to teach skills and strategies to be successful.

“We go to inner-city schools and spend time with the kids. A lot of kids think they don’t have a chance or have a level playing field and we try to help them get an opportunity. To the young people, I would say to them, don’t be deceived. My life has really exceeded my dreams and I am extremely fortunate to have had the mentors in my life that I did. I tell the kids that you can do it, too. You can go from Bell Fork Road to your Super Bowl.”

Bob always looked to be an example of how far someone can go with an opportunity.

Bob also played a critical leadership role in establishing the National Football League Players Association, the official labor union that bargains on behalf of NFL players. He then co-founded and chaired, up until his passing, the Retired NFL Players Congress, an independent organization with the mission of supporting former players who suffer medical and financial hardship. He was known as a trusted advisor and valuable liaison between NFL owners, management, players, and the business community.

In 2021, Wake Forest announced the creation of the Robert Grant and Kenneth “Butch” Henry Trailblazer Award to recognize the significance of the first Black football players at Wake Forest University and the historical role Wake Forest Athletics played in integrating Division I sports in the South. This award celebrates Wake Forest student-athletes, alumni, staff, and community members who have blazed trails in the areas of diversity, inclusion, equity, and other important social issues that better the lives of others.

Bob and Butch were honored that fall by Wake Forest Athletics with the inaugural Trailblazer Award.

Bob’s participation and ability to overcome racial obstacles helped pave the way for change in society and is why he was also presented with the Inspiration Award at the 2022 NCAA Convention.

Bob was an avid reader and loved spending time with his family – most of all his grandchildren, whom he called on a regular basis to keep in touch no matter what coast they lived on. Bob dedicated his life to helping others, and always gave more than he received.

His larger-than-life presence will be greatly missed by so many. May we always endeavor to live up to his standard of accomplishments and service to others. He was, for all of us, the ultimate trailblazer.

Bob’s ashes will be spread at his home away from home on the beautiful island of Kauai.

In lieu of flowers please consider donating to Goals For Life.

Goals For Life, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation, is an educational youth development program that, in coordination with local school districts, teaches potentially at-risk youth the skills and strategies that are necessary for success in life. Goals For Life has a team of former professional football players who have been carefully trained to deliver a detailed curriculum in public schools.

Goals For Life sends the former athletes into schools to facilitate goal setting workshops with students who demonstrate maladaptive behaviors, as well as any students wishing to learn success principles. Drawing on their personal experiences, the athletes speak of the enthusiasm, drive and determination that were primary factors in achieving their goals. GFL athlete mentors teach students that what applies to the world of sports, also applies to education and to life. The students discover that qualities such as integrity, preparation, high self-esteem, perseverance and the confidence to succeed are a winning combination in all fields and endeavors.

Bob Grant was an influential member and mentor of the Goals For Life Foundation. He truly enjoyed helping shape student’s lives with valuable life lessons that you just couldn’t find in textbooks. He would want us all to keep that giving spirit alive.

Bob was always so kind and helpful as well as transparent and honest when we talked, both in person at conferences and by phone over multiple years. My heart is very sad to lose this man with so much Aloha…a rare thing to find connected to the NFL. God bless his sweet heart. I know the angels will welcome him home with open arms. Many heartfelt condolences to all the family.

I had the honor of meeting Uncle Bob 6 years ago when I was invited to an event he was sponsoring for entrepreneurs. Spending time regularly at the RPC headquarters and being welcomed into the community has been a transformative experience for me. I’m not a spring chicken, and age was never a factor with Uncle Bob – another year, another experience. He was truly a leader and inspiration, and it was very clear how he adored Katherine and his family. Through these years I was also fortunate to get to know Desiree and see the love and respect she and her kids felt for Uncle Bob.

The stories Uncle Bob could tell would literally make my jaw drop. His football career, his time in Vegas, all the differences he made while remaining so humble. I feel blessed to have know him and so sad to see him go. I know he’s up there watching us and will certainly continue to move the needle in that Uncle Bob way.

You will be missed, Uncle Bob. Rest in peace.

Well Grant, here I am again, brokenhearted, the same as I was when you came back into my life after my daughter died and my husband was struggling with Alzheimer’s disease. I feel as if I’m in a dark tunnel with no way out after losing my husband and you, my dearest friend, in less than a month’s time. You were the “therapist” that I needed then and now more than ever!

I’ll try to do what you told me a few years ago; keep a positive attitude, find the fond memories, take one day at a time and I’ll find the light at the end of the tunnel. I found the light then but I’m back stumbling in the dark again and hoping the light will again appear.

Rest in peace my dear friend and know you are truly loved! I’m officially missing you!!!❤️❤️❤️ FOREVER

Bob,
You may have shed your physical embodiment but you’ve also left an indelible, contribution on so many. May your inspiring spirit soar freely and surrounded with great loving light!

Since meeting Bob years ago through Katherine, it has always been my great pleasure to spend time with Bob whenever we had the opportunity to be together. Bob’s effervescent and positive “can do“ energy always guaranteed an uplift to my day, and no doubt many countless others.

I cherish those moments. Those fleeting moments we’ve spent together and salute you, sir, for a life well lived.

My deepest condolences and love to Lady Katherine, your family and friends, and all those whose lives you’ve touched to live beyond limitations. You are missed.
Love
Garth

I met Bob through his wife Katherine who is a good friend and former work colleague. My impressions of Bob were that of a kind and generous man with a very positive and upbeat spirit – a person dedicated to his family and possessing a commitment to his profession and community. I believe that he made the world a better place. Rest in peace Bob.

My Brother Bob, You’ll always be in my heart. Even though your mission in this physical reality is over, we’ll continue to dialogue in the spiritual domain. Rest assured that Rosielee and I will continue to take care of Katherine when ever she needs us. I’m so happy I had the privilege of taking care of youth. You’ll be missed my Brother, however, the value you created for other’s happiness and well-being speaks volumes. Now you can dance in the multiverse of consciousness. Duane Thomas just transitioned this past Sunday, August 4, 2024. He is like minded light being of consciousness like yourself. I love you Bob and thank you for being your Greater Self and a good friend in my life. 🙏🏾♥️
Bon voyage, you were a Buddha in Life, now you merge with with the Buddha of the universe.
