Doris Delores May (Singleton) Hendrickson (affectionately called “Dot” by her siblings), was born May 27, 1934 to Alonzo and Dora Singleton in Jacksonville FL. They moved to New York when she was 11 where she attended church with her mother and was president of the Young Adult Choir. After graduating from high school in NY she received a certificate in key punch operation.

Doris loved music. In her early twenties she’d go to the Apollo Theater twice a week to see established as well as up-and-coming artists. Some of her favorites were Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, and James Brown.

She also liked moving new places and meeting new people. After leaving New York, she moved to Mississippi, Louisiana, and later to California.

She truly lived up to the meaning of her name – “Gift.” Just being in her presence and feeling her genuine loving energy was truly a gift. Her God-given talent was always having the right words to say at the right time to uplift and encourage your spirit. She leaves the priceless legacy of always telling your beloved family and friends that you love them.

No matter the problem you may be facing she’d always let you know “The Lord will give you the desires of your heart,” and that “He has you in the palm of His Almighty Right Hand.”

In addition to being a wonderful wife and mother of 4, she was a very smart business woman. She owned and managed a restaurant, record shop, and beauty shop – all at the same time – then ran an auto body and mechanic shop for 18 years.

Doris truly loved the Lord. She was a member of West Angeles Church, Bishop Blake in Los Angeles and loved listening to Bishop McBath of Calvary Revival Church in Virginia as well as numerous televangelists.

Doris went home to her Heavenly Father Friday February 2, 2024. She is preceded by her husband Anthony Hendrickson, sons Ronnie and Anthony, daughter Marion, parents Alonzo and Dora Singleton, siblings Alice, Henry, Lenora, Ben, Alonzo, Donald, Marian Jolene, Bobby, and five others who did not live to adulthood.

She leaves to mourn her daughter Donna Williams (Gregory Sr.), daughter-in-law LaTasha Hendrickson-Cheatham (Stanley), son-in-law Isiah, grandchildren Omar, Gregory Jr., Anthony (Ferryn), Antoinette, Devante, Malcolm, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Ms.Doris was such a blessing to me/my family when she worked with elders with dementia. She cared for and loved my mother and my boys to the point we considered her family and continued to be friends long after the center closed. She always seemed to know when I needed a word from the LORD and would pray with and for me. We really LOVED HER. God bless her family whom she’d loved and talked about and was so proud of.
